From trainee to IAM consultant with Cloudworks Academy

Nikolai Irgens was 58 when he joined Cloudworks Academy as a trainee, bringing many years of IT experience but no previous experience with Identity and Access Management. Through structured learning, hands-on customer projects, and support from experienced colleagues, he developed his skills and built a new career in IAM.

I thought it was great fun starting as a trainee, and I had no prior knowledge of IAM.

Nikolai was far from new to IT. He had worked in the industry since 1995, with a background in programming and development. Although Identity and Access Management (IAM) was a new field for him, many of the underlying technologies and concepts were familiar.

Learning through Cloudworks Academy

As a trainee in Cloudworks Academy, Nikolai combined structured learning with practical experience in IAM projects. Through the buddy program, he worked closely with an experienced consultant and gained first-hand insight into customer projects from the start.

“For the first few weeks, I joined my buddy Kristian on customer assignments. I got to see how he approached different challenges and which solutions he chose. I was supported, looked after, and included from the beginning,” says Nikolai.

As his knowledge and experience grew, Nikolai gradually took on more responsibility.

The first time I went to a customer on my own, I was terrified, but at the same time I thought it was great fun. I was very proud of the trust Cloudworks showed me. I had received a thorough introduction to the products, and it was exciting to put what I had learned into practice and experience that sense of achievement.

From trainee to IAM consultant

Nikolai quickly developed his IAM expertise through a combination of training, certifications, and practical customer experience.

He went on to achieve Certified Expert, the highest certification level for OpenText NetIQ Identity Manager, and became an IAM consultant working on a variety of customer projects.

His journey demonstrates how existing IT experience can provide a strong foundation for developing specialized IAM expertise when combined with structured learning and practical experience.

Since joining Cloudworks Academy, Nikolai has worked on several complex IAM projects, including the IAM DevOps project for Bærum Municipality. Today, he works with Apotek 1, supporting the continued development of its IAM environment.

Never too old to learn

For Nikolai, joining Cloudworks Academy as a trainee proved to be the right decision.

I am very impressed that they took the chance on someone my age as a trainee. You are never too old to learn!

Continuous learning remained an important part of his development after completing the trainee program. Through competence days, technology sessions, certifications, and collaboration with colleagues, he continued to build his expertise in Identity and Access Management and Identity Governance.

For Nikolai, however, the experience was about more than developing technical expertise. The people and working environment at Cloudworks became an equally important part of the story.

I’ve heard it said that no one reaches the end of their life wishing they had spent more time at work. But I genuinely enjoy coming to work. We have great colleagues, happy customers, and a fantastic social environment. Even on a perfect Sunday afternoon, I find myself looking forward to Monday morning!
