How Leksand Municipality modernized its identity management with Identum

Leksand Municipality in Sweden wanted to move away from a custom-built, person-dependent identity management solution. With Identum eADM, the municipality has created a standardized foundation for automation, simpler administration and greater control.

From a custom-built solution to greater automation

Leksand Municipality wanted a standardized identity and access management (IAM) solution with strong potential, while remaining simple enough to manage and develop largely in-house.

With Identum eADM, the municipality has moved away from custom-built, person-dependent solutions and gained better visibility and control over its identity processes. Swedish data storage was also important due to the sensitive nature of the identity data involved.

One example is the handling of data from the municipality’s payroll system, which is used to create accounts in Active Directory. With eADM, a change that previously could take an entire day was completed in around two minutes.

What previously took a day took two minutes. That was a real aha moment.

Automation with measurable results

License management was one of the first areas Leksand Municipality chose to automate. By using information about users’ latest logins, the municipality can avoid assigning licenses that are not needed and automatically remove licenses from inactive users.

The potential savings became apparent almost immediately.

We could see that the savings could finance at least half, if not the entire license cost of eADM.

And license management was only the first automation. The municipality is also working with notification flows and sees further opportunities to automate identity processes and develop more role-based access.

A structured implementation with Cloudworks

Cloudworks supported Leksand Municipality throughout the implementation of Identum eADM, providing IAM expertise and a structured approach to the project.

For Leksand Municipality, having a partner with a local presence in Sweden was also important. With sensitive identity data involved, being able to work closely with a local team and discuss ideas and requirements throughout the project provided an added sense of confidence.

Cloudworks has extensive experience with IAM and knows how to run these projects. There was a clear structure, plan and framework to follow.

At the same time, an important objective was to avoid long-term consultant dependency. The municipality wanted a solution it could largely manage and continue developing internally, while still having access to expertise when needed.

Building for the future

For Leksand Municipality, implementing eADM is not the end of the identity management journey. The municipality sees further potential in automation, role-based access and giving managers greater visibility and control over permissions.

An important success factor has been collaboration across the organization, particularly with payroll and HR, and focusing on business needs rather than existing technology.

With a standardized platform in place, Leksand Municipality now has a foundation that can continue to evolve with the organization’s needs while simplifying administration, reducing manual work and creating measurable value.CW_illustration
